You are invited to buy food and drinks from our menu of freshly made items. The food is good, the staff is friendly, and every time you buy from Lunch a-la Kart , you are helping employ people with barriers to mainstream employment. It acts as a training program and employment opportunity.

Lunch à la Kart is an initiative that came out of another social enterprise in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, Eastside Coffee Bar Cooperative. When ECBC closed its doors in Summer 2003, the cooperative gave permission to Canadian Mental Health Association, Vancouver Burnaby branch, to build on a lunch delivery concept. In August 2003, CMHA met with Potluck Cafè to develop a partnership supporting a lunch delivery service business. Over the next few months, a small Steering Group consisting of community members, mental health consumers and organizational representatives met to craft a business plan and begin operations. In January 2004, the first route began development and focused on businesses and organizations in the Downtown Eastside. From that time onwards, Lunch à la Kart has been a learning and growing experience for all members involved. This past summer, Lunch à la Kart launched officially with support from the Vancouver Police Department. Our goals for the next year are to expand our business and customer base, and build relationships with regular customers. We plan to add another route in addition to our Downtown Eastside route, and are looking to offer brown-bag catering services to not-for-profit and governmental organizations, always with the goal of providing more employment opportunities for mental health consumers.
